Ummah Solidarity Gathering For Rohingyas Gets OIC's Attention - PM Najib

ISKANDAR PUTERI (Johor, Malaysia), Dec 6 (Bernama) -- Najib Razak said the strong voice of Malaysians at the Ummah Solidarity Gathering for the Rohingyas at the Titiwangsa Stadium last Sunday (Dec 4) has attracted the attention of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The Malaysian Prime Minister said following the assembly, the OIC would hold a meeting at the Foreign Minister's level in the near future to discuss the Rohingya issue. As such, Malaysia would deal with the OIC secretariat regarding the meeting that would be held to ensure the Rohingya issue could be addressed in the best way possible. "The assembly that we held last Sunday was heard by the OIC and they will hold a meeting to discuss what inflicted the ethnic Rohingyas," he told reporters here Tuesday. The gathering, which was participated by Najib and Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as well as PAS (an Islamist political party in Malaysia) President Abdul Hadi Awang, also saw non governmental organisations (NGO) and community and national political figures joining in as a show of solidarity against the atrocities committed against the Rohingyas. Najib also stressed that the assembly was not a protest, but a peaceful gathering to show the stand of Malaysians on the Rohingya issue. According to the Prime Minister, the gathering was different from Bersih 5, which was a street demonstration and did not have any legal permit. "What we do during the gathering was not a protest but because we gathered peacefully in accordance with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012," he said. "I attended because I wanted the voice of Malaysians to be heard and be given attention," added Najib. --BERNAMA
