Ustyurt State Reserve turns 25 years

Aktau, October 12, 2009 (Khabar) - The Mangystau region has been celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Ustyurt State Reserve. During the conference, the heads of all the natural reserves of Kazakhstan discussed the issues of preservation of the Republic’s reserve sites. The Ustyurt natural reserve occupies a total area of 223 thousand hectares. Scientists say that this area is a specific desert which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The area is also the habitat of rare animals including the Ustyurt ram called a moufflon. This species can only be found within the area stretching between the Aral and Caspian seas.

Konstantin Plakhov, director, Institute of ecological studies and planning:
- Apart from the Ustyurt ram, this area is also the habitat of many different species including caracal, honey badger, falcon-baloban, Egyptian vulture and so on. All of them are in real need of protection.

In the 1990s, Ustyurt saw a significant reduction in species listed in the Red Book. Now, the situation is changing for the better thanks to the back-breaking work of the reserve staff. Biologists believe that ideally each region has to form its own network of protected areas whose employees will be dealing in the restoration of the ecosystem as well as routine security and registration activities.

Shadiyar Urkimbayev, director, Ustyurt State Natural Reserve:
- In 2003-2004 only five hundred muflons remained in reserve, and this year we have counted already over nine hundred animals. This is our achievement. Last two years we have carried out monitoring of an animal and flora of Ustyurt reserve together with the Kazakhstani and Russian scientists. Entomologists have already found new kinds of insects.

Zhasar Adilbayev, director, Karatau State Natural reserve:
- If such conferences are carried out regularly to bring together the heads of reserves who can share information, it will finally become clear to everyone that we are to preserve the wonderful nature of Kazakhstan for future generations.

Participants in the conference entitled “the role of reserves in the preservation of biodiversity in deserts and semi-desert areas” said that all reserves in Kazakhstan should be converted into national parks which would include both historical and natural monuments.
