Weather in Kazakhstan
Almaty, January 05, 2010 (Khabar) - After the UK, Russia, Spain and Germany, which have all been faced with heavy snow, the weather anomalies have now moved to Kazakhstan. Some regions of the country witnessed heavy snowstorms whilst others are thawing. For example, Pavlodar saw three months worth of average snowfall in just one week.
Oleg Kruk, deputy mayor of Pavlodar:
- We are undertaking all measures in order to cope with the situation. Every night, we use 40 units of snow clearing equipment and during the day this number increases to 65-70 units. Of course, we have attracted additional assistance and constructors are helping us out.
During three days alone, over 10 thousand cubic metres of snow were removed. According to preliminary forecasts, cleaning the city will need at least a further two days. Specialists at Kazgidromet reported that soon Pavlodar will be faced with more frost and snowstorms.
In Atyrau, people were unable to enjoy the snow on New Year Eve since it had all melted. Currently, the city residents have a lot of problems with slush. During the holidays, the city engineering department had to work hard in order to clean the streets of slush.
Vasiliy Palichev, Atyrau resident:
- Earlier we had such weather. But there was much snow during recent years. Winter was snowy and cold. We hope the weather will please us in future and snow will fall. Probably biting will be good if the weather is cold.
It seems that spring has arrived in Almaty. The weather forecasters have said that although the weather is warm, it is too early to put on spring clothes, since it is only one step from warmth to frost. Only a year ago at this time, the weather was 20 below zero. The coldest winter happened in 1919, when the temperature was 36.5 below zero. Specialists said that such changes have happened because of global warming.
Paiyzkhan Kozhakhmetov, acting deputy of general director of “Kazhydromet” republican state enterprise:
- You know the reason, it is man’s interference into the nature and emission of greenhouse gases. This increases the load on the atmosphere and there is the greenhouse effect, and the temperature continues increasing every year.
In Aktau, the arrival of swans symbolizes the beginning of New Year. Currently, the swans are living on the local beach. Old residents of the city remember that during the coldest winters, they used to take the birds home, feed them and then set them free. Enterprises used to allocate money for the feeding of swans. Currently, people come to the beach in order to feed the birds where the swans show no fear of the people at all.
