World Intellectual Property Day held in Vientiane

VIENTIANE.27.04.2012(KPL) - A rally was held in Vientiane, on 26 April to celebrate the World Intellectual Property Day.
The rally drew more than 350 participants including businessmen and students in the presence of Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Mr. Houmphanh Intharath, line deputy ministers, high-ranking officials, diplomatic corps, international organisations.
Director General of Department of Intellectual Property, Mr. Sitha Bounyavong said the purpose of celebration was to promote innovation and creativity and protect the products of intellectual property and offer fair competitive in society as well as apply the intellectual property system to socio-economic development.
It also protects the copyright of creative and trademarks in the society.
Thanks to the close attention of Lao government since 2000, the huge amount of fake products have been seized nationwide and then destroyed, said Mr. Sitha Bounyavong.
Each year the slogan will be changed, this year celebration focuses “visionary innovators”. The rally today doesn’t only the celebration of World Intellectual Property Day but also to raise awareness on protection of pattern, sub- pattern of industrial approach, trademarks, copyright and products coming from the intellectual property, he added.
The Party and government always focus on promoting and paying attention to the protection of intellectual property rights based on law. Thanks to the close attention, the first law on intellectual property was approved at the 4th plenary session of National Assembly (the 6th legislature) on 24 December 2007 and formally proclaimed on 14 January 2008.
Under the message of this year celebration, Minister of Science and Technology Boviengkham Vongdara has called on Lao innovators and creative, scientists, students and all social strata to brainstorm ideas for applying the existing intellectual property to the development and improvement.
He also urged them to create innovation to serve in the society by developing design and unique trademark of Lao products.
At the same day, there was an art performance and a trade fair exhibiting local products has been made by Lao people, the institutes of education and business units.
