ECO SECRETARY-GENERAL SAYS TURKEY IS A ROLE MODEL FOR REGIONAL ECONOMIC MODERNIZATION
ANTALYA (A.A) - 16.02.2010 - Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Secretary-General Mohammad Yahya Maroofi said that Turkey, which was considered a role model for regional and economic modernization, acted as a bridge between the East and the West and opened new gates for ECO-member countries.
Making opening remarks of the 20th meeting of the ECO Regional Planning Council in the southern Turkish province of Antalya, Maroofi highlighted importance of region for sustainable economic development.
Delegations from ECO-member countries (Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan are in attendance at the meeting.
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) attends the meeting as an observer.
Issues such as regional food safety, new measures to be taken to further improve industrial cooperation among the member countries, tourism, education, environment and energy will be high on agenda of the meeting which will end on February 18.
ECO is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Turkey, Iran and Pakistan with the aim of promoting economic, technical and cultural cooperation among the member states. In 1992, the organization was expanded to include seven new members: Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
