Indonesia Urges UN To Create Peace In Syria

Jakarta, July 20 (ANTARA) - Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono urged the United Nations on Thursday to immediately take concrete steps to stop violence in Syria. "According to me, situation in Syria is already able to be categorized as a civil war. So, Indonesia really hopes the UN Security Council could immediately make an agreement to overcome the situation," he said at a press conference here on Thursday. He said situation in Syrian is very tense and if it is allowed to continue more victims certainly would fall. With regard to the problem he said Indonesia proposed the setting up of a peace-making force if efforts to stop the violence fail. "If the current mandate is not effective enough to stop all forms of violence and clashes Indonesia believes it is now time to consider adjusting the mandate based on Article 7 of the UN Treaty," he said. He said the peace-making force would transform the mission of maintaining peace into creating peace. He said the peace creating mission meanwhile may not be linked with demand for a change of political power or continuation of current government. To make the mission a success he said five permanent members of the UN (the US, Russia, Britain, China and France) are allowed to participate in the force that will carry a UN flag in its operations. "I am really convinced the responsibility to stop the situation is not solely in the hands of the Syrian people and their government but also the international community," he said.
