Kataeb party calls to 'rescue' legislative polls amid disagreement on election law

NNA - Kataeb party urged on Monday for rescuing the imminent legislative polls, warning that the 1960 election law threatens correct representation of people. "The 1960 law is a sword upon the neck of people and democracy; it constitutes a direct threat to correct representation," the party said in a statement issued following its weekly meeting chaired by MP Sami Gemayel. "It turned out that the government has given up its promise to draft a new election law that would guarantee correct representation," the party remarked, urging the Parliament to endorse a modern voting system where uninominal districts will be adopted. "The government has linked its presence to two achievements: the legislative polls and the state budget," Kataeb reminded, wondering at the Cabinet's keenness on addressing the oil resources dossier. Accordingly, the party said it would announce its remarks on the content of the freshly-approved oil decrees "at the proper time."
