Morsi charged with leaking secrets to Qatar

TEHRAN, Sep. 07 (MNA) – Egypt’s senior prosecutor said ex-president Morsi will be tried for leaking national secrets to Qatar. In a statement released today, the prosecutor said ousted President Mohammad Morsi and two of his assistants were charged with leaking classified documents and national security secrets including military deployments to Qatar intelligence. The statement also said eight others, including a senior Al-Jazeera executive in Qatar, cooperated with them to deliver documents in exchange for $1 million. The prosecutor described the alleged act as “the biggest treason and espionage case in the country’s history.” Former Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi came to power following the collapse of former dictator Hosni Mubarak’s regime and was ousted about a year later by a military coup in July 3, 2013. He has so far been imprisoned and has appeared before court for three times for charges including cooperation with foreign militant group. He faces a possible death penaty.
