NAM Head Notes All Countries' Right To Peaceful Use Of Nuclear Power

United Nations, Oct 9, IRNA – Permanent Representative at UN Mohammad Khaza’ie, on behalf of Non Aligned Movement here Monday stressed that entire world countries have absolute right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Khaza’ie made the comment on Monday afternoon. As the Head of the NAM Harmonizing Office at UN at the UN Disarmament Committee, he emphasized upon NAM’s basic stands about the need for full nuclear disarmament around the globe as the topmost priority of the Non Aligned Movement. He meanwhile announced NAM member countries’ concern regarding the slow trend of the international nuclear disarmament and lack of progress in total nuclear disarmament by the countries that have nuclear arsenals, against their international commitments. Khaza’ie added, “The Non Aligned Movement considers the only acceptable guarantee for non-usage of the nuclear weapons, or even threatening to their probable usage in their full annihilation and shutting down their arsenals in nuclear armed countries.” The ambassador and permanent representative of Iran at the UN announced the NAM member countries’ serious worries about the defense doctrines of the nuclear armed countries and the NATO document that was recently ratified in May, 2012, in which using nuclear weapons in NATO operations is mentioned. Khaza’ie, on behalf of NAM, proposed that a conference would be convened in shortest possible time at a high political level aimed at identifying the ways and the means for effective annihilation of the nuclear weapons. He said that atop the agenda of such a conference there should be the time schedule for full annihilation of the nuclear weapons by the countries that possess them, and total halt of the nuclear weapons’ design, renovation, test, transfer, treat and production plans and programs. The Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran at the United Nations, Khaza’ie, noted that the major obstacle in the way of international nuclear weapons disarmament is the lack of the required political will in some countries, announcing the NAM member countries’ readiness for constructive interactions with the UN Disarmament Program, and contributions to finding the ways and means for effective international nuclear disarmament. He referred to the strong will of the Non Aligned Movement for the establishment of the Nuclear Weapons Free Zone Middle East (NWFZME), reiterating that the racist Zionist regime of Israel is the only side in this sensitive region that is armed with nuclear weapons, has not joined the NPT, and has even announced its determination not to join the international treaty. Khaza’ie further stressed, “The NAM courtiers believe Israel must join the NPT without any delay and that that regime must allow full supervision of the IAEA various treaties of it entire nuclear facilitates. The head of the NAM Harmonizing Office at UN added that the NAM is also asking for full ban on transferring the facilities, information, materials, facilities, and parts of technical and engineering assistance related to nuclear energy to the regime of Israel. The permanent representative of Iran at the UN reiterated that NAM emphasizes that the entire world countries are entitled the absolute right to develop the full cycle of nuclear fuel at national level, announcing serious concern about continued restrictions on export of nuclear materials, facilities, and technology for peaceful purposes to developing countries. Khaza’ie added, “The Non Aligned Movement emphasized the undeniable right for having peaceful nuclear activities and believes any type of attacks, or threatening to attack, the facilities of peaceful nuclear programs that are active, or in the process of construction, is not only a great threat against the global human society and the global environment, but also clear breaching of the international rules and regulations, the UN Charter, and the IAEA.” The rotating head of the NAM at the UN ended his disarmament address by emphasizing the need for decreasing the military spending around the globe and increasing the economic and social development budgets instead./end
