TURKEY'S FOREIGN MINISTER PROCEEDS TO DAMASCUS
JEDDAH (A.A) - 04.09.2008 - Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan has proceeded from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to Syrian capital city of Damascus.
During his stay in Jeddah, Babacan attended the first ministerial meeting of the Strategic Dialogue mechanism between Turkey and Gulf Cooperation Council-member countries.
He also signed a memorandum of understanding aiming at developing
relations between Turkey and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Babacan also met Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Secretary-General
Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu.
Later, Babacan left Jeddah for Damascus. Babacan, together with Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan, will attend the quartet summit of Turkey, France, Syria and Qatar.

DAMASCUS (A.A) - 04.09.2008 - The quartet meeting "Dialogue for Stability" has begun
in the Syrian capital city Damascus.
President Bashar al-Asad of Syria hosts the summit as the current president of the
Arab League.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President Nikolas Sarkozy of France,
which holds the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU), and Amir Sheik Hamad
bin Khalifa al-Thani of Qatar holding the presidency of the Gulf Cooperation Council
are attending the summit.
Turkey has institutional relations with all of the parties, the Arab League, the EU
and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Foreign Minister Ali Babacan and Ahmet Davutoglu, chief advisor to the prime
minister for foreign policy, are accompanying Erdogan.
The four leaders are expected to make a joint statement following the summit.

INITIATIVE TO INITIATE TALKS BETWEEN SYRIA AND ISRAEL
DAMASCUS (A.A) - 04.09.2008 - President Bashar al-Asad of Syria has said that Turkey
was one of a few countries taking initiative regarding the Middle East peace
process, and thanked Turkish authorities.
A joint press conference was held at the end of the quartet summit in the Syrian
capital city of Damascus.
President al-Asad said at the conference that Turkey was the only country taking the
initiative for indirect talks between Syria and Israel.
He highlighted importance of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's
reliability and Turkey's mediation in the process.
President al-Asad also added that they attached importance to Turkey's proposal for
a Caucasian Stability Platform.
