Contagious mandarins
Taldykorgan, March 18, 2009 (Khabar) - Van with contagious mandarins was stopped at Korgas customs point in Almaty region. Leaves of fruits had larva of very dangerous pest, citrus white-winged insect. Experts say if this insect penetrates the republic, then it would be impossible to get rid of it. Van with 10 tons of mandarins was stopped and these fruits are included into the list of quarantine objects, it means obtaining of very dangerous pests.
Bolat Omarov, head of frontier check-point on quarantine of plants:
- Auto transport was coming from China, Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region through Korgas border post. It was going to Almaty’s market “Altyn Orda” for further selling.
Mandarin has a usual look but one its leaf can contain about 20 000 larva of citrus white-winged insect that can be seen only with the help of microscope. They suck sap of plants that then dies. Adult insect has length of several millimeters and also eats greenery. Citrus white-winged insects eat persimmon, honeysuckle, lilac and jasmine. Experts suppose this insect can eat other plants as well after tasting it. That’s why consequences of penetrating of citrus white-winged insect into the territory of Kazakhstan could be lamentable. For example, agricultural workers still try to annihilate Colorado beetle and US white butterfly.
Nurmukhambet Aituganov, deputy head of regional inspection of Ministry of Agriculture of RK:
- There are 6 quarantine inspects in our republic and in neighboring China – 120. If we don’t toughen work at border posts 120 harmful inspects can get into our republic and cause great damage.
The owner of contagious cargo will have to pay fine in size of 15 monthly calculated indexes and van with contagious mandarins was returned back to China.
