COVID-19: SLTA Can Go Ahead With March Tennis Meets
KUCHING, Feb 19 (Bernama) -- Sarawak’s Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Ministry wants the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) to continue with their plans to organise three international tournaments scheduled in March despite the COVID-19 situation.
Its minister, Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said SLTA could appeal to the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBNS) to allow players from China to compete in the tournaments, namely the 35th Sarawak Chief Minister's Cup, the Junior Davis Cup and the Junior Fed Cup.
"Maybe JPBNS has to look into this matter, I can't decide on it. It needs an appeal and the names (players from China) to be given to the state government for them to be given an exemption," he told the media at an event to promote the three tennis competitions here Tuesday.
The Sarawak Chief Minister's Cup championship is supposed to feature 150 players from 37 countries, including 11 from China, in the competition to be held at SLTA Tennis Centre from March 10-15.
Meanwhile, the Junior Davis Cup is scheduled to be held from April 5 to 10 and the Junior Fed Cup is from March 30 to April 4.
