ICSS Calls for Binding Framework on Intellectual Property Protection in Sport

Geneva, April 15 (QNA) - A delegation from the International Centre for Sport Security ICSS (an international organization based in Doha) participated in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), entitled "Information and Communication Technologies for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals", hosted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva for four days. The participation of ICSS is part of the international community's efforts to protect the future of the sport industry, especially in this annual forum, which represents a global platform for the United Nations to ensure the implementation of the objectives of sustainable development of the United Nations. In his speech, the Chairman and CEO of the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS) Mohammed Hanzab, delivered on his behalf by Director of Sport Public Policy at ICSS Diogo Guia, calls to move towards formulating an effective framework for the establishment of legislators against piracy whether it is coming from entities or countries, pointing out that it is not enough to describe acts of piracy as immoral. Hanzab added that in order to ensure long-term protection of the integrity and values of sport in all its dimensions, it is important to adopt a coordinated and unified policy at the international level to respect and protect patents and intellectual property rights in the sports field, which is a fundamental factor in the financial sustainability of major sporting events. During the Summit, ICSS organized a session during which added values to sports industry and the role of intellectual property was highlighted. The session highlighted the emerging threats and risks faced by TV rights holders of major sporting events and football championships. Participants stressed the increasingly important role of intellectual property rights in this area. (QNA)
