Inconsistent Malaysian Girls Settle For Bronze In AYTBC

KUCHING (Sarawak, Malaysia) April 23 (Bernama) -- Inconsistency dashed Malaysia’s hopes of winning the girls’ team gold medal in the Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championships (AYTBC) at the Megalanes Sarawak here Tuesday. Despite leading by 247 pinfalls after the first block Monday, the Malaysian quartet of Nur Syazwani Sahar, Nurul Ayunni Junaidi, Nurul Alyssa Junaidi, and Gillian Lim failed to hold off the marauding Singaporeans from fighting back in the second block to clinch the gold medal with a total of 4,664 pinfalls. South Korea downed 4,628 pins to take silver while Malaysia settled for bronze with 4,617 pinfalls. National team manager Robert Lu, who congratulated the Singaporean girls’ team for their superb come-from-behind win, was confident that his girls would come good in tomorrow’s Masters event. “Tomorrow will be different. We will talk to the girls and I’m sure they will rise to the occasion in the Masters event,” he said. At least the girls won a bronze. The national boys’ quartet of Nevern Netaneel Marcellinus, Shahrukh Amin, Muhammad Syazirol Shamsuddin and Muhammad Hafiz Zainuddin could only finish fifth with a 4,780 total. Singapore bagged a golden double when their boys’ team downed 5,123 pins to emerge triumphant. The Philippines finished second with 4,996 pinfalls while South Korea took bronze with a 4,979 total. In Wednesday’s Masters event, all four Malaysian girls have made the cut after finishing in the top 16. As for the boys, Muhammad Syazirol missed the cut by just one pinfall to compatriot Shahrukh, who finished in 16th spot with 3,605 pinfalls. -- BERNAMA
