Repair of Rail Tracks In Southern Thailand To Start In May

BANGKOK, April 27 (TNA) - Repair of rail tracks for Thailand’s southbound routes are scheduled to start next month, said Prapat Chongsanguan, governor of State Railway of Thailand (SRT). Mr Prapat said that repairs of tracks for the northern routes are now completed and SRT administrators would this week start surveying damaged tracks in the South and calculate time which would be spent on the repair which would start from May. In order to facilitate train passengers, repairs would be made only on parts of the tracks which are damaged due to a long use, Prapat explained. The repair would take between 3 to 5 hours daily and it would take 900 days to complete while SRT would spend 6 billion baht, he said. Regarding vandals removing about 200 spikes from track in Songkhla’s Thepha district, SRT officials believe it was the work of those who wanted to sell them for money and not a terrorism act. They said that the stealing would affect train services and passengers in the community area only and not the majority of passengers in the deep South. (TNA)
