Thailand upgraded on fighting child labour

BANGKOK, Sept 24 (TNA) - The US Department of Labour has recognised Thailand for making progress in combating child labour problem in the country by putting the kingdom in the ‘significant advancement’ category from ‘moderate advancement’ earlier. Labour Minister General Sirichai Ditthakul said the US Department of Labour last Wednesday reported in the ‘Findings on the Worst Forms of Child Labour 2016’ that it had elevated Thailand’s status to the top category after the country had made significant improvement in solving its child labour problems. These significant improvements include increasing legal punishment against wrongdoers, setting up an investigative body to handle related crimes and imposing measures to protect child and forced labour in industries. However, the US Department of Labour has raised certain problems for Thailand to consider such as insufficient number of inspectors and interpreters which could help in dealing with foreign workers in Thailand.
