AL To Meet In Cairo On ME Nuclear Disarmament

Tehran, Oct 7 IRNA –Arab League is to hold a meeting in Cairo on Sunday to prepare grounds for Int'l Arab Conference in the year 2012 under the title of 'creation of a free zone of nuclear and mass destruction weapons in the Middle East'. Director of Arab League Public Relations Office Wael Alassad, who is in charge of non-proliferation of mass destruction weapons dossier, told IRNA reporter in Cairo that Finland would be host of the conference and representatives from the USA, Britain, Russia, special envoy of the UN secretary general as well as Finland deputy minister of Foreign Affairs will attend the meeting. An Arab diplomat, who wanted to be anonymous, told IRNA that the US and a number of countries are not very eager that the conference take place, because they do not want the issue of Israel nuclear arsenals, which is a threat to the region, to be highlighted and they want Israel to monopolize the nuclear arsenal. The Arab countries have expressed their own dissatisfaction with slow process of preparation of the conference as a result of the US imposed pressures. Two years ago, Tel Aviv expressed its dissatisfaction over the final statement of the conference on non-proliferation nuclear arsenals convention in the year 2010, because the statement said that Israel is the sole country which did not sign the convention. The Zionist regime is scared that 2012 conference may concentrate on Israel and its nuclear weapons./end
