UN Official, Iran Ambassador To Syria, Meet

Damascus, June 27, IRNA – Head of the UN observer mission in Syria Major General Robert Mood conferred with the Iranian Ambassador to Syria Mohammadreza Sheibani.
During the meeting, Mood briefed the ambassador on his trips to New York and Geneva as well as his presence in the meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
Pointing to the constructive, effective and key role Iran plays in regional developments, the UN official stressed the necessity of Iran's presence and participation in the international contact group for settlement of Syrian crisis.
He also explained the reasons for the halt in the mission's activities in the past months and highlighted the importance of full implementation of the six-article plan by Kofi Annan who serves as the UN especial envoy in Syrian affairs.
Sheibani said the way out of present crisis in Syria can be only achieved through dialogue between the government and the opposition groups.
Rejecting any military or security solutions for the crisis, the ambassador stressed that none of these solutions would bear any fruits but will only result in deterioration of the situation and its spread to other countries in the region.
He urged certain countries to stop providing political, financial and arms supports to armed groups inside Syria.
This was the second meeting between the two officials within the last couple of months./end
