Withdrawal Of Iran Invitation “A Compromise With UN’s Credibility”: Indian Scholar

New Delhi, Jan 25, IRNA – Condemning the UN move to withdraw its invitation to Iran to attend the Geneva talks on Syria, an Indian academician Saturday termed it a “compromise with world body’s credibility under the US influenceˈ. In an exclusive interview with IRNA, Professor Bashir Ahmed Khan, former pro-vice chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in Delhi said: “For the last three decades it has been experienced that the UN is drifting from its objectives.ˈ He criticized it’s inaction, under the influence of the US, towards increasing violence against innocent civilians in the Middle East in particular and across the world in general”. He stressed that the US and its allies opposed Tehran’s presence keeping in mind that its presence will be inimical to their vested interests of regime change in Syria. “Ban Ki-moon, instead rejecting the opposition, compelled to buckle under the US pressure and rescinded the invitation,ˈ he noted. Basir further noted that the main goal of the West through Geneva talks on Syria is to secure pressure for regime change in Syria and not to resolve the conflict. “Despite the fact that Iran, having influence in the region, can play a pivotal role in resolving the Syrian conflict with maintaining the sovereignty of the country, the world body excluded Iran. At this juncture, it was the duty of the UN to avoid partiality, but it failed again like earlier instances,” he added. Maintaining that the US and its allies have been arming the Syrian rebels to topple the Assad’s government, the scholar asserted that Iran along with other regional countries can find diplomatic solutions, encourage broad national dialogues that reflect the legitimate aspirations of all sections of Syrian society and respect Syrian independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty./end
