FM Mohamad Leads Malaysian Delegation To Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting In Manila
KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 (Bernama) – Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan is leading the Malaysian delegation to the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related meetings (59th AMM) in Manila from July 20 to 24, where the ongoing West Asia crisis is expected to take centre stage.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said the 59th AMM will focus on the impact of the crisis on Southeast Asia and beyond, as well as ASEAN's response to safeguard trade and investment, regional energy and food security, and supply chain resilience.
Wisma Putra said the ASEAN foreign ministers are expected to review progress in ASEAN Community-building, the implementation of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), which marks its 50th anniversary this year, and the priorities and key deliverables of the Philippines' ASEAN chairmanship.
A high-level conference of the High Contracting Parties to the TAC is on the agenda.
The ministers will also take part in an extended informal consultation on the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) on Myanmar, where they are expected to follow up on the recommendations of the last ASEAN Leaders' Review and Decision on the 5PC regarding the conflicts and humanitarian situation in the country.
The ministers will also discuss preparations for the 49th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits, to be held in the Philippines in November.
“Malaysia’s participation in the 59th AMM and related meetings demonstrates its commitment and resolve to strengthen ASEAN Centrality, unity, and resilience in an increasingly complex global environment,” the ministry said.
Mohamad is scheduled to participate in the ASEAN foreign ministers' interface meeting with representatives of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) and a meeting of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Commission.
Also on the agenda is the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conferences with its Dialogue Partners, namely Australia, Canada, China, the European Union, India, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
“The ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with Dialogue Partners will provide opportunities for ASEAN to discuss practical cooperation and the way forward, as well as exchange views on the current geopolitical challenges and ways to overcome them,” Wisma Putra said.
Other engagements include the 27th ASEAN Plus Three Foreign Ministers' Meeting (APT FMM), the 33rd ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), and the 16th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting (EAS FMM).
Additionally, Mohamad is scheduled to attend the fifth Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD).
On July 22, Mohamad and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will co-chair the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with China in Malaysia's capacity as the country coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations for 2024–2027.
On the sidelines, Mohamad is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several of his counterparts.
At the end of the 59th AMM, the ASEAN foreign ministers are expected to adopt several outcome documents, including a Joint Communiqué of the 59th AMM outlining the outcomes of discussions as well as strategic and important decisions, Wisma Putra said.
