Phuket Warns Against Swimming After 23 Speedboats Destroyed in Fire

PHUKET, Jan 8 (TNA) - Thai authorities on Thursday cautioned against swimming in Phuket’s Chalong Bay after a pre-dawn fire destroyed 23 speedboats, causing over 38 million baht in damage.
While the Pollution Control Department (PCD) reported that water quality remains within safety standards, officials warned that oil slicks and sharp debris pose ongoing risks to the public.

Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthitaworn has ordered an emergency cleanup, directing the Marine Department and local municipality to remove wreckage and contain oil spills within 24 hours.
Although water tests conducted 10 meters from the shore showed safe pH and oxygen levels for recreation, the PCD maintained its advisory against entering the water until the surface film and fire-related waste are fully cleared.
Local officials are currently installing warning signs for tourists while investigators work to determine the cause of the blaze.
