Malaysia Set Sights On Asian Netball Championship Glory

PETALING JAYA (Selangor, Malaysia), Feb 11 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Netball Association (PBJM) intend to challenge for the title at the Asian Netball Championship, which is scheduled to be held in Hong Kong in August, as part of their preparations for the 2027 SEA Games that Malaysia will host.

Its president, Alwiyah Talib, said the Asian meet would allow them to create a formidable team by combining the seasoned seniors with some youngsters with huge potential.

"At the Asian level, we are usually among the top three teams. So, naturally, our target this time is to emerge as champions. Singapore is our biggest threat now… we want to gather the best of the best ahead of the Asian meet,” she said after attending the Netball Super League (NSL) Clinic here on Wednesday.

Alwiyah, who expects training to commence during Ramadan, said they are driven to aim higher following the third-placed finish in the 2024 edition.

Malaysia have won the Asian Netball Championship title twice - in the inaugural 1985 edition and 2016.

Commenting on the NSL, slated to begin in April, Alwiyah said it will serve as an important platform to assess the players before the final selection of the national team.
