Presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan to be held on January 24, 2027

Bishkek, Feb. 17, 2026 /Kabar/. The next presidential elections of Kyrgyzstan will be held on January 24, 2027. This decision was made public by the Constitutional Court of the country on Tuesday, February 17.
Earlier, the Constitutional Court received a proposal from President Sadyr Zhaparov to provide an official interpretation of the Constitution.
The official conclusion of the court states that the elections should be held on the fourth Sunday of January 2027 - in accordance with Chapter 10 of the constitutional law "On elections of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic and deputies of the Jogorku Kenesha of the Kyrgyz Republic". The Parliament is obliged to set the voting date no later than four months before the elections, that is, until September 24, 2026, the statement says.
The court also explained that the current six-year term of the acting President Sadyr Zhaparov is counted as the first. Thus, the head of state has the right to run for a second term in 2027, which, according to the current version of the Constitution, will be five years.
Separately, the Constitutional Court emphasized that public discussions about the term of office of the president do not constitute a legal basis for early elections.
The resolution notes that extraordinary voting is possible only in the case of early termination of the president's powers - on the grounds directly listed in part 1 of article 72 of the Constitution in 2021: voluntary resignation, removal from office in accordance with the established procedure, inability to perform duties due to health or death. The list is exhaustive and is subject to extensive interpretation.
In the absence of such grounds, the scenario of early elections is legally excluded, the court concluded.
