RUSSIA-NATO COUNCIL IS GOOD GROUND FOR COMPROMISE SOLUTIONS

BRUSSELS, June 16 (Itar-Tass) - NATO' general secretary Jaap de Hoop
Scheffer has disagreed with the Russian president's view that NATO is
unsuitable for solving European security problems.

Jaap de Hoop Scheffer told a news conference after a session of the Russia-NATO Council that the view was unjustified. He also noted that NATO hadn't yet received proposals from Russia on working out a new concept of European security.

The NATO general secretary admitted that Russia and NATO still had
differences over such issues as the CFE treaty, anti-missile defence and the situation in Kosovo. At the same time, he said that the Russia-NATO Council continued serving a good ground for searching compromise solutions. He added that Saturday's discussions had been honest and open.
