Distribution of resources of Syrdarya river

Shymkent, January 17, 2009, Khabar - All countries - participants of the Interstate Coordination Water Commission of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan fulfilled their obligations on the use of resources of transboundary Syrdarya river last year. This was announced at the regular meeting of the committee in Shymkent.
As a result, there were no problems with either power generation or with irrigation water. This year, our country and Kyrgyzstan again agreed on the supply of Kyrgyz electricity in winter as compensation for irrigation water in summer. Only issue of irrigation of Maktaaral district of South Kazakhstan region wasn’t settled yet. And this is directly connected with leaving of Uzbekistan the energey system of Central Asia. This system was based on the water resources of the Naryn-Syrdarya cascade and going out of Uzbekistan caused shortages of electricity in Tajikistan. Tajikistan is now forced to self-generate missing megawatts at the Kayrakum hydroelectric power station. This means that in winter Kayrakum reservoir can lose a large part of water, and it will be not enough for summer watering.

Anarbek Orman, acting chairman of Committee on Water Resources of RK:
- They want to transfer the Kayrakum reservoir completely in the energy regime. This is impossible, because the sown area of Uzbekistan and in our Maktaaral district directly related to Kayrakum reservoir. I think this issue will be discussed with participation of energy workers.
