Ashura detainees stand trial in Iran

TEHRAN, Jan. 18 (MNA) – The first trial session of detainees arrested on Ashura day was held on Monday morning.

In the session, the court heard the cases of five detainees and an indictment accusing them of “moharebeh” (enmity against God) was read out.

The indictment called for the maximum punishment to be imposed on the defendants.

After the indictment was read, the lawyers defended their clients.

On December 27, a day which fell on Ashura (martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein), protesters took to the streets in central Tehran and chanted slogans against top government officials. They clashed with the police and damaged public property.
