.RF-Denmark intergovt council to discuss econ coop'n.

COPENHAGEN, January 19 (Itar-Tass) - The 8th session of the
Russo-Danish intergovernmental council for economic cooperation is to be
held here on Tuesday.
The council will discuss a wide range of matters concerning
Russo-Danish cooperation in the financial-and-economic sphere, in the
fields of transport, energy, and agriculture.
The session will be presided over by the Council Co-Chairmen Igor
Levitin, Russian Minister of Transport, and Klaus Grube, Permanent State
Secretary, Danish First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. A protocol is
to be signed as a result of the session.
The intergovernmental economic cooperation council was set up under
the Russo-Danish agreement, dated October 27, 1992, on the development of
economic, industrial, scientific and technical cooperation.
Working groups on trade, investments and interbank cooperation, the
agri-industrial sector, transport, energy, environmental protection, and
regional cooperation function within the Council's framework.
Levitin, who arrived in Denmark on Monday, familiarized himself with
the operation of Copenhagen's Kastrup airport, and met with the executives
of the Moeller-Maersk Company, discussing cooperation in the field of
shipbuilding and the development of the sea transport infrastructure.
Vyacheslav Grushetsky, RF Trade Representative in Denmark, told
Itar-Tass, "Notwithstanding the global financial and economic downturn,
Russia and Denmark have managed to avert a considerable slump in
reciprocal trade. The downturn proved not as deep as has been the case in
trade with many other European countries and with the whole world".
Russo-Danish trade turnover decreased by 18.2 percent in the
January-October 2009 period as compared with the corresponding period of
2008 to run at $2,600 million. Russian export declined by 5.5 percent
while Danish one by 32 percent. Decrease in Russia's reciprocal trade with
European Union countries over the period was, however, 44, 2 percent and
with the world as a whole -- 42.1 percent.
Energy resources, ferrous metals, timber, fish, and chemical-industry
products are Russia's staple export commodities. Machines and equipment,
food, furniture, footwear, and medicines are imported from Denmark.
The Russian Trade Representative said, "In that difficult period
Denmark did not abandon a single cooperation project in Russia, although
the financing of some of them was cut down. The major Danish companies
Danfoss, Rockwool, H+H, etc. continue to operate in Russia. The most
interesting projects are connected with efforts to raise the energy
efficiency of the housing/public utilities sector, in which the Danes have
gained a wide experience, and with the development of agriculture".
