KUWAIT TIMES FEATURES 20 JANUARY TRAGEDY
Baku, January 19 (AzerTAc). An article titled “January tragedy” by Azerbaijani ambassador Shahin Abdullayev was published Monday in Kuwai`s leading Kuwait Times newspaper.
“At midnight on the eve of 20 January, 1990, Soviet troops attacked Baku from all directions and killed over 130 civilians and wounded over 700 using hardware and weapons,” the article says.
According to the story, Mikhail Gorbachev, President of the USSR “admired in the West as a "democrat" and "peace lover and nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize "for his leading role in the peace process in October 1990” was personally responsible for the tragedy and killing of the innocent people.
The author noted in the story that successful political, economic and social reforms led by President Ilham Aliyev allowed Azerbaijan to grow into the regional leader.
