Mongolian parliamentary elections scheduled for June 29.
ULAN BATOR, June 16 (Itar-Tass) - The elections to the Great State
Hural (Parliament) of the Mongolian Republic will be held on June 29.
Twelve political parties and one coalition will take part in them,
officials of the Mongolian Electoral Committee told Itar-Tass here on
Monday. According to the Constitution now in force, the country's supreme legislative body is to be elected for a term of four years.
The population of Mongolia now numbers 2.6 millions and 1.67 millions will be able to take part in the voting. Local commentators believe that the main competition will take place between the major political forces of the country: the ruling Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP) and the opposition Democratic Party. Public opinion polls show that the two organisations enjoy equal trust of the population. MPRP leader and Prime Minister Sanj Bayar says that his "party will contest the elections under the motto: 'Justice, Responsible State, Progressive Development,
Prosperous Life'." Our election platform, he added, "is directly linked with the Complex Policy of Mongolia's National Development, which the parliament had recently approved. It sets twelve comprehensive tasks."
Bayar believes the implementation of the party's elections program
"will usher in a new stage of Mongolia's intensive development, bringing the average rate of economic growth up to at least ten per cent and the per capita gross domestic product -- to approximately five thousand U.S. dollars by 2012".
In turn, the leader of the Democratic Party says that its election
platform is based on the "key values of democracy, in particular, on human liberty and rights, on justice and free entrepreneurship". The program "stipulates ten political steps, which will be shortly implemented".
Premiership is practically guaranteed to the leader of the political force, which wins parliamentary majority, and he will actually determine the course of the country's political and economic development.
