(continuation)
Many Mongolians believe this is the true zodiac rather than the 12 constellations western people are familar with. The New Year according to the oriental calendar in Mongolia is called Tsagaan Sar, which translates as White Moon or White Month.
Ethnologists give various explanations for this. Some say it derives from the word tsagaa (milk foods) as it is customary for Mongolians to eat a lot of milk products at New Year. Others think it is called Tsagaan Sar because the colour white is a symbol of all that is beneficial, of happiness, purity and frankness, and also of milk products, the basic foodstuff of the nomadic pastoralist.
