Iran's parliament set to discuss lowering ties with Britain

TEHRAN, Jan. 23 (MNA) – MP Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh has said the Majlis will hold a debate on reducing relations with Britain tomorrow.

What has been proposed and studied in the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee is to reduce, not severing, ties with the British government, Falahatpisheh told the Mehr News Agency on Saturday.

On December 16, the committee urged the Foreign Ministry to lower the level of diplomatic relations with the British government due to its hostile attitude toward Iran especially after the June presidential election.

The MP added that some officials from the Foreign Ministry will also attend the committee meeting.

He went on to say that the nature of economic and trade ties with Britain is different from political relationship; however, he added the continuation of trade cooperation with the country will depend on London’s behavior in its political dealings with Tehran.

He said one issue at question in the committee is: why should the economic ties benefit Britain while it continues to pursue a hostile attitude toward Tehran.

Falahatpisheh also said Britain is cannily trying to make the Iran-European Union relationship dependent on the Tehran-London ties.

He noted any decision in this regard will be made based on the Islamic system’s interests.
