5% decrease in Iran’s traffic fatality rate

TEHRAN, Jan. 23 (MNA) -- Road accident fatality rate has declined over five percent between March 21 and December 21, Iran’s Road Police commander said here on Saturday.

Compared to the same period in the last year, traffic fatality rate decreased by more than five percent across the country over the first nine months of the current calendar year (began March 21, 2009), Alireza Esmaeili said.

According to Esmaeili, there has been a drop of 600 in number of those killed by car crashes over the first nine months of 1388 (began March 21, 2009) compared with the same period in the year before.

He described strong interaction between governmental and non-governmental organizations as well as observance of traffic regulations as the main reasons behind such a decrease.

Esmaeili also called inadequate roadways in disrepair and heavy volume of cars on the streets the main contributors to car crashes in Iran.

Recent studies showed that “human error” is the cause of 52 percent of Iran’s accidents, while 30 percent are caused by road conditions and 13 percent by mechanical malfunctions.

During the previous Iranian calendar year, road accidents claimed the lives of about 23,000 people, indicating that the death toll was 63 people per day and about 2.6 people per hour.
