U.S. cannot instigate change in Iran, even with $45 billion

QOM, Jan. 23 (MNA) -- Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has ridiculed five U.S. senators’ proposal to spend $45 million to bring about change in Iran, saying the U.S. cannot instigate change in Iran even with $45 billion.
The five U.S. senators recently urged Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to spend the $45 million that has been allocated to support organizations that are helping people circumvent restrictions on Internet use in various countries.
“Clinton should know that she cannot cause any change in Iran, even with $45 billion,” Larijani said on the sidelines of a ceremony held to inaugurate a computer network and some other telecommunications systems in Qom.
“Clinton thinks that those who staged riots on Ashura day are the brave Iranian nation, but she should know her remarks (against the Islamic establishment) make Iranians stand stronger against the United States,” he added.
December 27, 2009 was Ashura day, which is the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS).
In a letter, which was made public last Wednesday, five senators urged the secretary of state to promptly spend the $45 million that has been allocated to fight communications restrictions in various countries, the New York Times reported on January 20.
The Victims of Iranian Censorship (VOICE) Act, which was passed in July 2009, calls for the funding of measures to counter Iranian government efforts to jam radio, satellite, and Internet-based transmissions.
