Iran mulling over invitation to attend London conference

TEHRAN, Jan. 24 (MNA) – Iran is studying the invitation by Britain to participate at a conference on Afghanistan in London on January 28, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said on Sunday.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown had invited Afghan President Hamid Karzai, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, NATO allies, Afghanistan’s neighbors, regional powers, and key international bodies to a conference in London on January 28 to set a political and security timetable for Afghanistan for 2010 and beyond.
The task includes setting out a roadmap for Afghan forces to gradually take over more security responsibilities, and refining an exit strategy for NATO forces.
Mehmanparast told reporters if Iran’s views are not considered at the conference, there is no need to attend the conference.
However, if Iran’s views are considered and the conference takes an approach in conformity with a policy adopted by regional nations, Tehran will attend the meeting, he noted.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Mehmanparast said that the Iranian first vice president is scheduled to attend the Istanbul conference on January 26; he added that the Afghan, Pakistani and Tajik presidents as well as some officials from other countries will attend the meeting.
