Japan ready to cooperate with Russia as Pacific state.
TOKYO, June 17 (Itar-Tass) - Japan would like to turn the area off its Pacific coast into an inner sea of states situated on the Pacific coast and is ready to cooperate with Russia as a Pacific state, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda declared at a meeting with members of the " Moscow Club" - an association of the biggest world news agencies created on Itar-Tass initiative.
Tuesday's interview with the Japanese prime minister was attended by chiefs of the Italian ANSA, US Associated Press, German DPA, British Reuters, Japanese Kyodo News and France Press news agencies.
Itar-Tass Director General Vitaly Ignatenko represented Russia at the
meeting.
Fukuda said, commenting on his recent meeting with Dmitry Medvedev and Vladimir Putin, that both Russian officials expressed a very active attitude to the problem of further development of the Russian Far East which overlooks the Pacific Ocean. If the region develops Russia might become a Pacific power. If Russia has this vision of its strategy then Japan is ready to cooperate with Russia not only as a neighbor, but as a Pacific state as well, Fukuda said.
Japan is ready to offer assistance in the development of resources in Siberia and the Far East because this would contribute to Asia's prosperity in general, the prime minister said in reply to a question asked by Vitaly Ignatenko. Since the demand for energy resources will be growing the development of the Russian Far East with its rich resources is important for the region in general and would lead to political stabilization in Asia, the Japanese prime minister said.
He reminded of a decision made by Japan State Bank for International Cooperation on large scale financing of the Sakhalin-2 project, taking into account its significance for the region. Fukuda emphasized the importance of cooperation with Russia in environmental protection in the Far East. Experts of the two countries have been conducting consultations on problems of protection of marine bio resources and forests, forest fires and illegal forest felling, Fukuda said.
