Japan further support UXO clearance activities in Laos

(KPL) The Government of Japan decided to provide US$679,611 of grant aid to the operation of the Lao National UXO Programme (UXO Lao) in Saravane and Sekong provinces.
This is the phase 2 of the UXOs clearance project, under the Grant Assistance Scheme for Grassroots Human Security Projects.
The grant contract project was signed at the Mai Thi Chit Guest House, Vientiane Capital yesterday, between Mr. Masaaki Miyashita, Ambassador of Japan to the Lao PDR and Bounpone Sayasenh, National Programme Director of the UXO Lao.
Mr. Laoly Faiphengyoa, Vice Minister of Labour and Social Welfare and other official concerned attended the signing ceremony.
“During the Indochina war, more than two million tonnes of explosive ordnance such as cluster munitions dropped in the Lao PDR. More than thirty years after war, UXO is still identified as a key hindrance to the economic and social development of the country, continuing to spoil physical safety and livelihood of local people,” Mr. Miyashita, Ambassador of Japan to the Lao PDR.
This grant assistance will enable the UXO Lao to continue to implement their UXO-related activities such as surveillance, actual UXO clearance and capacity building of their staff in Saravane and Sekong provinces.
It will contribute not only to reducing the number of human casualties but also increasing the amount of land available for agricultural production and other social- economic activities in the two provinces.
The government of Japan has supported the Lao UXO sector since 1999 and total funding cost so far is about US$ 9.37 million .A new UXO clearance Project in Attapeu province will start this April by Japan ‘s financial support, which will be implemented by JAMAS, a Japanese NGO.
The JAMAS has been conducting UXO clearance activities in Xiengkhouang [province since 2006. In addition the government of Japan has been assisting UXO Lao’s activities in Sekong, Saravane and attapeu provinces through Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund since 2007. Furthermore, the Government of Japan will start a new assistance project this April for UXO clearance activities in Attapeu province using Japan-ASEAN integration Fund, which will be implemented by JAMAS, according to the statement of Japanese Ambassador to Laos.
