POLICE CHIEF EXPECTS JAN 28 RALLIES TO RUN PEACEFULLY

Jakarta, Jan 26 (ANTARA) - Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri asked on Tuesday people to refrain from anarchy when they stage rallies to mark the completion of the government`s first 100 days programs on Thursday.

"I call on all components of the nation not to ruin the current conducive situation merely to satisfy seasonal interest," he said at a meeting with Manpower and Transmigration Minister Muhaimin Iskandar and a number of labour unions here on Tuesday.

Under Law No. 9 of 1998 on the freedom of expression, every citizen was free to express their opinion but in an orderly manner, he said.

"Don`t turn to violence much less to provoke or incite other people," he said.

He said the police have coordinated with all relevant parties to ensure that the rallies will run peacefully.

Earlier, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police said they will deploy 10,000 personnel to maintain security during the rallies.

Spokesman for the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief Commissioner Boy Rafli Amar said his side will also make ready water cannons to anticipate anarchic acts during the rallies.

The rallies are expected to take place around the State Palace, the House of Representatives/People`s Consultative Assembly (DPR/MPR) building and at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle.
