U.S. CONGRESS BACKS AMENDMENTS TO MCC

Ulaanbaatar, /MONTSAME/ On Wednesday, a Minister of Finance S.Bayartsogt presented to parliament Speaker D.Demberel a bill on ratification of amendments to the Millennium Challenge Compact and draft parliamentary resolutions on registration of some areas under the state special protection and on approval of Water national program. Thereby, S.Bayartsogt requested to discuss the bill on ratification of amendments to the Millennium Challenge Compact /MCC/ immediately.
The MCC was concluded on rendering non-refundable aid of USD 285 million for the reduction of poverty through economic growth on October 22, 2007, and was ratified by parliament of Mongolia on January 15, 2008. Since provided for in the compact the "Railway" project will not be carried out, the Government of Mongolia put forward allocating the project funds for the implementation of two new projects and enlargement of some other projects under the implementation.
Reviewing the circumstances emerged, the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation Board of Directors has decided to allocate the project funds of USD 187 million for enlarging "Health", "Vocational education" and "Suburb pasture management" /USD 50 mln/ and for financing "Road" and "Clean Air" projects /USD 127 mln/.
The decision was backed by the U.S. Congress on December 29, 2009. Thereby, the Millennium Challenge Corporation was endowed a right to sign amendments to the Millennium Challenge Compact.
