PRESIDENT ASKS PRESS TO SPONSOR NATIONAL FOOTBALL CONGRESS
Jakarta, Jan 27 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked press institutions in the country to pave the way for the holding of a national football congress in cooperation with the National Sports Council (KONI).
The congress was intended to step up the quality and performance of national football teams which had repeatedly suffered defeat in important competitions in the recent past.
The president had made the request at a meeting with Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) chairman Margiono at his office here on Wednesday.
Margiono told reporters after the 45-minute meeting, he had reported about preparations for the observance of National Press Day but several national issues, including developments in national soccer, were also touched on.
"President Yudhoyono has asked the Press and KONI to pave the way for the organization of an Indonesian Football Congress. The press should be involved because it plays an important role in the progress of national football," Margiono said.
In response to the President's call, Margiono said the PWI and a number of related institutions would make the necessary preparations for the holding of the congress some time within the next few months.
"Of course, in organizing the congress we must not leave out the All-Indonesia Football Association (PSSI)," he said, adding that press figures attending the meeting with the president were among others Tarman Azzam, Sofyan Lubis, Bambang Harimurti, Wina Armada, Marah Sakti and Atal Depari.
President Yudhoyono had expressed hope that the efforts to hold a national football congress would be prepared well and with the cooperation from all related parties.***
