GOVT HOPES DEMONSTRATORS TO RESPECT STATE SYMBOLS

Jakarta, Jan 27 (ANTARA) - The government has asked all elements grouped in "Petisi 28" that are to stage rallies on Thursday to respect public order rules as well as state symbols, public or social facilities.

"State symbols and facilities of the public and other institutions must not be abused or disturbed. The demonstration also must not disrupt activities of government institutions," Coordinating Minister for Political, Security and Legal Affairs Djoko Suyanto said at a press conference here on Wednesday.

He spoke in the company of National Defense Forces (TNI) Commander General Djoko Santoso and National Police Chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri.

Djoko said the idea to occupy state facilities or symbols like the presidential or vice presidential palaces or the parliament building must be reconsidered.

The occupation of state facilities would be against the law or principles of expression of aspirations because the institutions were places for implementing the people's mandate, he said.

He said demonstrators also had to respect shops, shopping malls and other facilities.

He called on the organizers of the rallies to manage the mass actions well so that they would not disrupt other public activities, much less lead to anarchy.

"The government has so far provided ample room for all elements to express their aspirations and criticisms in accordance with the norms of democracy," he said.

Djoko said demonstrators also had to respect other people who did not take part in the actions so that they could carry out their activities peacefully. "This must be managed well together," he said.

On the occasion he also called on all community members and other elements to watch out for those intending to ride on the waves of the mass actions for ulterior purposes.

"In a mass rally it is not impossible for certain groups or parties to take advantage of the situation for their own interests which can be different from the rally's organizers'," he said.

"This is what we do not want to happen. Security forces will be present in line with their duties and the law. Let us respect each other. I believe the security forces will respect people's right to express aspirations according to the rules," he said.

Thereby two things would be saved, namely the law and development of democracy that had been started since 1998, he said.

"Since 1988 the dynamism of development of democracy in Indonesia has been extraordinary. Ten years ago it was difficult to imagine that our democracy would develop in the way it has. Therefore, it must be maintained well and not be marred by anarchism or violences that would only hurt our democratic image," he said.

Petisi 28 plans to stage demonstrations to criticize the government on the occasion of the conclusion of the first 100 days of the government of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.***
