YUDHOYONO TO SET UP NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR INNOVATIONS

Cikarang, Indonesia, Jan 27 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono plans to set up a national committee for innovations (KIN) to deal with global economic challenges, chief economic minister Hatta Radjasa said.

"If Malaysia has a tagline "Truly Asia", Thailand "Amazing Thailand" and Singapore "Trade and Service Country" in the near future Indonesia will also make one through the KIN," he said to ANTARA at an inauguration ceremony at the Institut Teknology Sains Bandung (ISB) here on Wednesday.

He said the KIN members would come from various circles including local and international academics. "They will be fully responsible directly to the President with regard to their performance," he said.

Hatta admitted he was optimistic the KIN would be able to lead Indonesia to become a knowledge society supported by its rich natural resources and strong human resources to meet competitions.

He said the goverment in 2009 already increased the fund allocations for innovations. "The allocation of funds for research and development in Indonesia in 2005 was still relatively low at around Rp1 trillion. But the government was aware of the situation and increased it this year to Rp2 trillion," he said.

He considered the increase was a correct strategic step especially for universities to improve their competitive power in the field of science particularly innovation.

"Whatever the tagline for Indonesia would be it would come from an agreement made by the KIN members. We as the people of Indonesia must be proud of it like other nations in the world," he said.***
