Churkin calls for efforts to resume Israeli-Palestinian talks.
UNITED NATIONS, January 28 (Itar-Tass) - Russia's Ambassador to the
United Nations Vitaly Churkin told an open Security Council meeting on
Wednesday that the world community should focus efforts on re-launching
Israeli-Palestinian talks that have been hampered by obstacles for a long
period of time.
"As soon as dialogue stops, all diplomatic activities die out and
other, very alarming factors, come in force. Sometimes, they lead to
serious shocks in that part of the world," the Russian diplomat said,
adding that was the reason why Russia was calling for a fresh start of
consultations between the Palestinian National Authority and the Israeli
government.
However, Churkin believes that the sides should clearly comply with
their 'roadmap' commitments.
"First and foremost, the talk is about ending the practice of building
new Israeli settlements, including natural growth, in the occupied
Palestinian territories," the Russian ambassador to the United Nations
went on to say.
According to Churkin, the settlements have become the main barrier to
reaching Israeli-Palestinian understanding. That is why the U.N.
secretary-general, Russia and a number of other partners, including in the
'quartet' of peace brokers in the Middle East settlement (Russia, the
United States, the European Union and the United Nations), have expressed
deep concern with a decision of the Planning Committing of the
Municipality of Jerusalem to build new facilities in the occupied part of
the city, Churkin said.
"The situation in the historical part of Jerusalem, in the vicinity of
sacred places belonging to three world religions, is no less alarming. The
settlers there are openly changing the existing status quo creating a
permanent source of tension," the Russian diplomat went on to say.
All the sides "should refrain from any steps that could predetermine
the outcome of future talks on the final status of the occupied lands,"
Churkin added.
Churkin emphasized that stable peace was unlikely to be achieved if
the Gaza Strip problem was not solved and if the siege of it was not fully
lifted on the entire perimeter.
The Russian diplomat emphasized that such steps were absolutely
necessary to end a permanent humanitarian disaster experienced by the Gaza
residents.
