HEALTH MINISTRY CLARIFIES TREATMENT OF HYDROCEPHALIC PATIENT

Jakarta, Jan 28 (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Health has explained that hydrocephalic patents at the Raden Mattaher regional hospital in Jambi are well taken care of.

Hydrocephalus is a usually congenital condition in which an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the cerebral ventricles causes enlargement of the skull and compression of the brain, and non-technically is it also called 'water on the brain', head of the ministry's public communications center Lily S Sulistyowati said in Jakarta Thursday.

She said the center has also contacted the hospital's director Ali Imran who said that a team of doctors had and is still going its most to save the lives of the patients.

He said a three months old patient, Rolesta Aprianto, had been brought to the hospital on Decemb3er 24, 2009,for complaints of head enlargement and muscular cramps.

Following an intensive examination, the doctors said the patient was in a very bad condition with a fever, enlarged head, and diagnosed him with hydrocephalus with medium dehydration.

The doctors gave him a liquid infusion, antibiotics, and improved his general condition.

On December 30, a CT scan had been conducted on the patient and the result showed maximum hydrocephalus.
After a treatment at the hospital, the condition of the patient has improved and on January 23, 2010 the liquid in his head is being removed.

However, the condition of the patient continued to deteriorate, and on the night of January 24 he could no longer be saved. All the treatment and medical expenses are born by the local administrations' health security agency.***
