Medvedev to mark Checkov`s birth anniversary in Taganrog
TAGANROG, January 29 (Itar-Tass) -- President Dmitry Medvedev will for
the first time visit Taganrog on the Sea of Azov on Friday to mark the
150th birth anniversary of outstanding Russian playwright Anton Checkov in
his home town.
Checkov, one of the greatest short-story writers in the history of
world literature, was born on January 29, 1860. He was also a physician
and practised as a doctor throughout most of his literary career:
"Medicine is my lawful wife", he once said, "and literature is my
mistress."
Chekhov's most famous works are The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three
Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard.
Two days ago in Taganrog they unveiled a monument to Checkov's Man in
the Shell and on Friday will lay wreaths to the monument to the famous
playwright.
Taganrog has been protecting all memorial sites related to the years
of Checkov's childhood, adolescence and youth. First of all, it is the
oldest Gymnasium where the Russian writer spent 11 school years and which
is now a literature museum carrying his name.
Chekhov has done a lot for his home city. The writer kept sending
books from his personal library, many of which autographed by their
authors, and buying dictionaries, encyclopedias, scientific literature
according to a wish list that he had established.
Checkov studied medicine in the Medical School of the Moscow
University and celebrations of his birth anniversary will go in the
Russian capital as well. The great writer who died on July 15 1904 of
tuberculosis in Badenweiler, Germany, was buried Novodevichy Monastery
cemetery in Moscow.
"Although Checkov was born in Taganrog, he is a Muscovite," Moscow
Mayor Yuri Luzhkov said.
A major delegation of culture workers will lay wreaths to Checkov's
tomb on Friday.
In Taganrog celebrations will continue through the year. In May the
4th Checkov Book Festival will open, as well as the Checkov Southern
Russia Cultural Center. In June the town will host an international
conference devoted to the works of the playwright, and October will see
the traditional theater festival called In Checkov's Native Place.
