THIRD SEASON OF `JALAN SESAMA` TO FOCUS ON ENVIRONMENT
Jakarta, Jan. 29 (ANTARA) - Deputy Chief of Mission Ted Osius on Thursday opened the third season of Jalan Sesama, the popular Trans7 TV children's television show supported by USAID.
In his remarks, he underscored the importance of children's education in helping Indonesia rise from poverty, according to information on the official website of the US embassy here on Friday.
"In a country where more than half the population subsists on $2 a day, education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. We need to encourage children to stay in school," said Osius.
He explained that Jalan Sesama's decision to focus this year's programming on the environment was timely because of the increasing need to control climate change. He noted that the U.S. has undertaken several programs with Indonesia to mitigate climate change and protect biodiversity.
In the new season, Jalan Sesama's established Muppet stars, Momon, Tantan, Jabrik, Putri, and Agent 123 will take young television viewers on exciting and challenging adventures through stories that address environmental concerns.
The show will teach children that they too can contribute to maintaining the environment in little ways, such as disposing of trash in proper containers.
This year, they will be joined by Elmo, the popular character from the original U.S. Sesame Street. Elmo and guest stars such as Sarah Sechan and Aming will show Indonesia?s children how to come even closer to nature, and how to prepare for natural disasters.
