POLICE ARREST IRANIANS WHO SWALLOW 266 CAPSULES OF SYABU

SHAH ALAM (Malaysia), Jan 29 (Bernama) -- Three Iranian men swallowed 266
capsules of syabu, weighing a total of 1.9kg, in an attempt to smuggle the drug
into Malaysia.

However, they caught the police attention at the KL International
Airport (KLIA) upon arrival from Dubai.

Selangor state Narcotic Crimes Investigation Department chief ACP Nordin
Kadir said the trio, aged between 41 and 48, had cleared the inspection at the
arrival counter but were arrested after acting suspiciously while waiting for a
taxi.

"No drugs were found on them during the body search at KLIA. The police then
took them to Serdang Hospital. X-ray checks on their stomachs showed that they
have swallowed suspicious materials.

"We believe they are just couriers. One of them visited Kuala Lumpur last
month before returning to Tehran," he told a press conference here Friday.

He said police had to wait for four days to have the capsules taken out from
them at the hospital.

Police also seized cash of RM1,250 (US4367), US$785 and Iranian Riyal 81,000
from the trio.

Nordin said police believed the drugs worth RM500,000 (US$147,058) are meant
for distribution in Malaysia.

The suspects had been remanded until Feb 1 to facilitate investigations
under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries a mandatory
death penalty upon conviction.
