AGO HAS YET TO DETERMINE AMBASSADOR HATTA'S FATE

Jakarta, Jan 29 (ANTARA) - The Attorney General's Office (AGO) has yet to determine the fate of Indonesian Ambassador to Thailand Mohammad Hatta following the office's decision to halt its probe into his corruption case, an AGO's spokesman said.

"The case remains discussed at the Attorney General's leaders meeting," Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes Marwan Effendy said here Friday.

The AGO investigators had recently proposed that the probe into the Indonesian embassy in Bangkok's corruption case be stopped through the issuance of SP3.

Ambassador Mohammad Hatta was named suspect in the alleged corruption along with deputy ambassador Djumantoro Purbo and treasurer Suhaeni.

The corruption case surrounds an unspent budget fund of Rp2.5 billion in the budget year 2008/2009.

Instead of returning the fund to the state treasury, irresponsible embassy officials were believed to have used it for the formation of the organizing committee of the Indonesia Day 2008 in Bangkok, a task force to handle Indonesian citizens stuck in Bangkok, and the organizing committee of the 14th ASEAN Summit.

The AGO had stopped the investigation into this graft case on the grounds that no state's money was lost following the return of the allegedly-misused money to the state.
