FIRST LADY REMINDS NATION OF THE DRUG ABUSE MENACE

Jakarta, Jan 30 (ANTARA) - First Lady Any Yudhoyono on Saturday reminded the nation of the serious threat narcotics abuse had become in the country.

"Indonesia is facing serious narcotics problems now because it is no longer a consumer but has become a producer of drugs," she said when launching a Narcotic Drugs-Free Youths Action Program at a shopping mall here on Saturday.

Illustrating the seriousness of the situation she referred to the recent discovery of ecstasy and meth home industries in several places in the country.

She said the spread of narcotics use among the younger generation was bode ill for the nation's existence in the future.

According to police data, she said, the number of narcotics abuse cases had continued to increase.

Although according to the National Narcotics Agency, no single segment of the community was free of narcotics cases, it was mostly youths who were involved in drug abuse cases.

"Their number reaches more than 14,000 or 19 percnt of the total number of drug users," she said.

She said that narcotic drugs affected the youths' productivity. "They become lazy, indifferent towards what is happening around them and liars. They are also inclined to commit crimes. The most dangerous thing is that their health deteriorates causing them to be easily infected by diseases such as hepatitis and HIV/AIDS," she said.

In view of that she called on the country's younger generation to say no to narcotics.

"Today I am glad I can hear directly from school, university students and other community elements who say they would stay away and free themselves from the danger of narcotics use. This means there will be no place for narcotics," she said after listening their committment against narcotics.

On the occasion she called on the younger generation to learn about narcotics not for the purpose of consuming them but avoiding them.

"We can actually do a lot to prevent narcotics abuse such as including knowledge about them in the elementary school curriculum. With it we hope students will understand what narcotics are," she said.

On the occasion the first lady symbolically handed over 15 stalls for operations by former narcotics users and dealers.

The yellow stalls marked by anti-narcotics campaign slogans "No Place for Narcotics" and "Care for Narcotics-Free Children" are provided by Alfarmart shopping network.

The recipients have a right to rent the stalls for two years and receive a capital worth Rp1 million to start their business.

One of the recipient, Sujatmiko, is a grandfather of three grandchildren who used to sell narcotics in Boncos, West Jakarta.

The event was also attended by the minister for empowerment of women's roles and child protection, Amalia Sari, sports and youth minister Andi Mallarangeng and national police chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri.***
