NAVY TO HAVE ANOTHER TWO SUBMARINES

Batam, Riau Islands, Indonesia, Jan 30 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian navy plans to have two more submarines to boost its strength, navy chief of staff Vice Admiral Agust Suhartono said here on Saturday.

"We have already had two. We will add two more," he said.

He said the procurement would be implemented this year. He said the selection process would be in 2010 and it is hoped they would start being produced in 2011.

If the building of the ships takes three years the start of their operation would be in 2014, he said.

He said the navy had eyed countries like Germany (U-209), South Korea (Changbogo), Rusia (Kilo Class) and France (Scorpion) for the procurement of the ships.

He said domestic shipyards were also able to produce submarines.

He said the navy had made a profound study on the specifications of the ships based on the degree of threats facing the country.***
