MINISTER CALLS ON BOWLERS TO MAINTAIN GOLD MEDALIST TRADITION
Jakarta, Jan 30 (ANTARA) - Youth and Sports Minister Andi Mallarangeng asked national bowlers here on Saturday to maintain their gold medalist tradition by winning more golds at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.
"Bowling is one of the sport branches where we expect to win golds. I hope bowlers will be able to maintain their tradition of winning golds at the Asian Games," he said at the opening of a bowling tournament.
He said bowling was one of the sport branches in which Indonesia expects to win golds. It was among the 17 sports branches Indonesia was preparing to compete in at the 2010 Asian Games.
The other branches were those where Indonesia had a reasoable chance or the potential to win medals.
Indonesia has so far been able to win one gold medal and one silver for bowling. Ryan Lalisang was the first to win a gold medal in the 2006 Asian Games.
Regarding the planned national conference of the Indonesian Bowling Association, the minister said whoever was chosen to lead the association must be able to improve the national performance in the sport branch.
The minister also said the Top Athletes Program would be expanded and mixed with the national training programs under the Indonesia Gold Medal Program.
The program was designed to produce top athletes for deployment to various international championships.
Mallarangeng said a presidential decree was still being prepared for the program as well as for preparations to participate in the Asian Games this year.***
